La dea greca Demetra è colei che ha creato ogni meraviglia del mondo naturale. In questa rappresentazione la dea genera un papavero, fiore a lei molto caro.
Demetra è rappresentata in tutta sua bellezza, con una corona di Narcisi sul capo. I suoi capelli sono accarezzati dal vento e tutta la sua immagine è illuminata dalla creazione del fiore. Soddisfatta e meravigliata, la dea contempla il suo papavero.

Nell’opera vi sono altri elementi naturalistici e simbolici: le spighe di grano (la conoscenza della coltivazione trasmessa agli uomini), i melograni (la fertilità della terra che governa) e la clessidra (capacità di decidere l’inizio e la fine di ogni creatura animale e vegetale).

The Greek goddess Demetra is the one who created every wonder of the natural world. In this imagine the goddess creates a poppy, a flower, which is her favorite one.

Demetra is represented in all her beauty, with a wreath of Daffodils on her head. Her hair is caressed by the wind and her whole image is lit by the creation of the flower. Satisfied and astonished, the goddess looks at her poppy.

In the work there are other naturalistic and symbolic elements: the ears of wheat that represents the knowledge of the cultivation transmitted to men, the pomegranates, that is the fertility of the land that governs, and the hourglass, that represents the ability to decide the beginning and the end of each animal and vegetable creature.
